Dear Mr Reed, The Tararua Team desperately need to have more computers. Last term our team was fortunate enough to trial 10 Chromebooks. We found there were many benefits to Chromebooks, such as: they are so affordable, it is much easier to get our tasks done and almost the whole class prefers to type their stories. Firstly, Chromebooks are so much cheaper and more affordable than the Apple computers we currently have. Chromebooks are only $320 including GST! If each class in our team were to get 5 Chromebooks (20 for the team), it would only cost $6400. You certainly would get more bang for your buck that’s for sure! Noel Leeming sells MacBook Airs for $1500. We would only be able to buy 4 for the same price! Secondly, most of our work relies on having a computer, such as, Mathletics, Google Docs, Google Classroom, Kiwi Kids News, in fact there are too many to list! Google Chromebooks are so user-friendly - they are quick and easy to sign in and they synchronize with our Google Accounts. Google Classroom allows the teacher to create templates for us to use, saving us time, which means we get more work done each day. Finally, the majority of our class prefers to type rather than handwrite. We surveyed our class and found out that 23/28 prefered to use computers. That’s more than 80% of our class. We prefer typing because it is quicker and it gives us the confidence to try more complex vocabulary. Editing and re-crafting is so simple because it does not involve a lot of re-writing. We can even share our documents with our peers to get suggestions on how we can improve. Another benefit to using computers is that we can write collaboratively. For example 10 students were typing at once to write our first draft for this letter. Saving us time, which again, means more time for more learning. Our teacher, Mrs Stephenson is getting a sore back from carrying our Literacy books home each week. The class set of Literacy books weigh 24 kilograms. If we could all type, she could do the marking online and no longer be in pain. In conclusion, we strongly recommend that you should purchase 20 Chromebooks for the Tararua Team because they are more affordable than Apple computers, we need more computers so we can complete our work and typing means we are more successful writers. Kind Regards, The desperate, yet hopeful Ruma Whitu
